The King of the Shadows and the Lord of the Fallen Empty

Even as young pups, Kestrel and Kadal showed signs of promise. Born into the time of the Reign of the Phantom as it became known, Kestrel was an unusually lively and outgoing character for the time. Many born during that era were quiet and distrustful, as well as closed and somewhat depressed all the time. He managed to stop his only litter mate, Kadal, from falling into the same state of depression as many others, and as a result he has always seen him as his younger brother. Kestrel and Kadal grew up in a pack ravaged by war, but is that what made them both into what they are now? This is their story. Summed up.

But first, a brief history lesson.

The Spectre War raged for nearly eight months, and extraordinarily long time for a wolf war, that rarely stray for more than eight weeks. The numbers of deaths surpassed all other previously known events, even the dreaded Rat Death, that killed within a day of catching it. Many who fell victim to the battle were innocent dogs who had little to do with the packs, and just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time, the birth of some of the resentments that the dogs hold against their wild cousins even in present day.

The Shen gained much of their fearsome reputation from this war. Their Gammas became known as the sturdiest, most dangerous wolves, able to stay vigilant for hours before becoming tired. Their fame only grew as the war raged on, reaching it's peak when the Alpha, who was a black male in his late seventh year, Sombra, seemingly killed the Phantom in revenge for the latter taking the life of his Beta, a pretty she-wolf who had been named Ripple.

The death of the Phantom was the end of the war. His pack disbanded, and though a few individuals attempted to revive the revolution, it was to no avail. They were quickly disposed of. Three years have passed since then.

tldr; there was a war people died including the female Beta of Shen.

This is mostly for my benefit, seeing as nobody else is ever on here any more. Just like a remake of the Hidden Histories I suppose, just going into more detail and focusing only on Kestrel and Kadal. And particularly how Kestrel went from Kestrel the Shen Gamma to Kestrel the Second Phantom. I like to wite out how my characters think. Kestrel has a lot of potential I didn't exactly see when I first made him two years ago.

Kestrel and Kadal were brought up by a she-wolf whose pups had been taken hostage and later killed by the Phantom's second in command, a large Rottweiler-Alsatian mix named Razor, (who coincidentally also lived after the Specter War and attempted to bring back the ideals left behind by the Phantom) and she loved them as her own. Her name was Aloe, and though Kestrel and Kadal were probably aware she was not their mother, for she had an entirely different pelt colour to both of them and lacked their distinctive facial markings. Aloe was kind and a good mother to the pups, and when they reached the get to begin training as Subordinates, they were normal and hyper pups.

When choosing their mentors, Sombra, the wolf who triumphed over the Phantom and kept his position as Alpha, paid special attention. At that point it was not common knowledge who the two pups' parents were, but the Alpha had guessed, and so had many of his packmates. He assigned a pair of his most senior Gammas to mentor the two youngsters, 'Izura the Blue Dragon,' and 'Lynn, the Earth Clawed.' While their titles were no doubt impressive, the two were not sure how to feel about Kestrel and Kadal, as they too had worked out their who the two's father was.
